Basic sonar units marketed as “fish finders” to the consumer came out in the 70’s. They were really just depth finding units.

The GPS units came out in the 90’s and make use of the geostationary navigation satellite system.

Now days, you can get either fish finder or GPS units starting at just under $100 and go up to several thousand from there. It all depends on quality and number of “bells and whistles”. Not all fish finding units have GPS built in.
